South East Asia

I have travelled all my life. I believe it all started when I was very small, perhaps at the age of two or three. My father's job made him move around to live in different places, and so my older siblings got to know and experience life in different countries. Then, as my dad settled in Peru, getting to know other places became more difficult. Hence, we began travelling every single holiday. I got to experience every department or Peru, as well as many countries in every continent. Travelling soon became a passion of mine. Therefore, as I graduated High-school back in december 2021, and realized I was not starting college until August 2022, I decided I could go get to know countries I had not visited, and I decided to go on my own. Going by myself, and on a budged would allow me to deeper experience the culture in each of the countries.

I was crossing the frontier between Costa Rica and Nicaragua. There was a massive line right at the immigrations building. Apparently, someone had engaged in a fight with a police officer and they had stopped processing passports. it was 11am and we had already been travelling for nearly 5 hours. Me and the friends I had made in Costa Rica were exhausted. THe line kept on becoming longer and longer behind us. We did not know what to do. As the clock ticked by, we became more and more nervouse, since our destination in Nicaragua was Ometepe Island. To get there we had to get in a four hour bus that would leave us in the ferry terminal so that we could take the boat all the way to the island. However, the last boat was at 8pm.

We ended up crossing to Nicaragua nearly six hours later. Ofcourse, we had already lost the ferry, but now, there wer no buses to Managua, the main city, so we were even more worried. As we desperately looked for a bus, or someone to take us as soon as possible, we met some taxi drivers, that said they were heading back home and could drop us off near the ferry terminal. We decided to go with them. That way, we could hop on the earliest ferry the next morning. Afterall, we end up sleeping in Rivas, the town in front of Ometepe Island.

The next morning, we woke up and headed off to our main destination. As we told other tourists and locals about our experience, they looked at us in amuzement. We got told that morning, that the town, Rivas, where we had slept that night was the most dangerous town in Nicaragua. The town where most of the gangs had originated. Now we understood why people looked at us wierdly and we found ourselves bumping into police officers at every corner.
